How can Sporting Age help to improve Fundamental Movement Skills?

Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) are movements that involve different body parts such as the legs, arms, trunk and head. They include such skills as running, hopping, catching, throwing, striking and balancing. In a school context, developing Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) is the foundation of PE & school sport as this helps support young people in their development as competent, confident & healthy movers.

We have categorised the FMS into three groups to make planning, teaching and assessment easier for all concerned. The three categories are locomotor, object control and stability. Within these categories, we have identified 14 FMS which we consider to be essential in developing the movement competencies of young people. The 14 skills can be seen on our FMS matrix below.

The Sporting Age baseline tests provide accurate data which generate a number of appropriate interventions that help to develop a young person’s Fundamental Movement Skills as well as providing support for primary school teachers.

Measuring and Reporting

Measuring and Reporting

Assessments allow teachers to track each pupil’s strengths and areas of improvement and identify their learning needs. Personal, class, and school reports can easily be created to share with parents, teachers, OFSTED and evidence for Sports Premium Funding. You will be able to identify children who are not developing as expected and also those children who are showing signs of being gifted and talented.
